In the last week, the Republican administration has swiftly dismantled many of the hard-fought gains our elders and ancestors sacrificed so much for. In less than a week, major retailers like Target, Walmart, and others have followed suit, rolling back their support for DEI initiatives and Black and minority-owned businesses.
Their actions send a clear and disheartening message—our businesses are no longer being prioritized or valued.
The ripple effect from this decision is inevitable, as other companies may fall in line.
But here’s the truth: If financial concerns were truly the driving force, these retailers would have stood firm in their support.
Why? Because Black and minority consumers contribute billions to the economy, the return on investment (ROI) of supporting our businesses is undeniable. (WE ARE EXCELLENT)✊🏽
This is where strategic action becomes essential. Instead of solely focusing on boycotting, we must be intentional with our spending. 🛒💡
I believe we need to rally around the Black and minority-owned businesses that have worked tirelessly to secure their rightful place on retail shelves.
Let’s make it fun—how about Dance-Ins? Instead of sitting, we show up at Target with our list, dance around, buy solely from Black and minority-owned brands, and leave! 🕺🏽💃🏾🎶
It’s not just about avoiding these stores; it’s about shopping with purpose—actively seeking out and purchasing from Black, minority-owned, and LGBTQA businesses within these retail giants to reinforce the demand and necessity of our presence.
Supporting Black and minority-owned businesses is more than a transaction; it’s an investment in our collective future.
By shifting our dollars with purpose, we can create sustainable economic ecosystems that thrive, even without corporate backing.
Our purchasing power can sustain and grow these businesses, proving their undeniable value and long-term impact.
📈What can we do next?
- Be intentional with our spending. Seek out Black and minority-owned businesses in your community and online. 🛍️
- Shop strategically. When shopping at stores like Target and Walmart, actively seek and purchase Black and minority-owned brands to ensure continued support.
- Amplify voices. Share their products, stories, and successes within your networks. 📣
- Hold major retailers accountable. Demand transparency and a true commitment to diversity beyond surface-level initiatives.
The power is in our hands. Let’s create change, support our own, and show the world the true strength, unity, and resilience of Black and minority-owned businesses. 💪🏽🌍
